Purses Full of Hope is a collaboration of passionate and powerful women who strive to give love and support to women seeking safety and shelter by delivering purses filled with toiletries and a handwritten message of hope to local shelters. The women they reach may be affected by domestic abuse, homelessness, substance abuse and other traumatic situations.
1 in 3 women have been victims of physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime, according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
These women often flee their homes with no belongings and are not only in need of various personal hygiene products but of something that can empower them and remind them of their resilience when they arrive at a shelter. Our purses are often handed to these women upon their arrival to offer them the basic tools they need.
Purses Full of Hope's co-founders are Sally Young, Kyra Miller, Brielle Miller and Kimberly Meehan.
We started our first purse drive in 2015 expecting to receive only a few purses, but to our surprise we ended up with over 100 donations! After seeing the impact those purses made on shelters in the Delaware County area, we decide to run another drive in the following season and expanded it to the South Jersey and Philadelphia areas as well. Now, our dreams are expanding across the country!
The most important thing we ask for is that every purse donation should contain a short, handwritten note to the woman who gets your purse offering them some love and encouragement. The note along with other things like makeup, nail polish, shampoo, conditioner and jewelry has the power to change a woman’s life.
As women, we all know what a new tube of lipstick can do for us!
"Every single time I pick up purses my heart swells with love and appreciation.”
